The lowland area in the north and east of the district, between Beacon Fell and the Fylde, is a dairy farming area, particularly noted for its cheesemaking dairies. Six of the ten Lancashire Cheese dairies listed on the British Cheese Board's website in 2011 are located in the City of Preston district (and the other four are only a few miles outside). Beacon Fell has a Protected Designation of Origin cheese named after it.

Benjamin Franklin (one of the Founding Fathers of the United States), though not born in Preston, lived briefly on Friargate, before departing for America. A Blue Plaque on the wall of the building commemorates the location.

Preston North End F.C. was a founding member of the English Football League in 1888 and were the first English football champions. Without a doubt, Preston's greatest player is arguably one of the greatest footballers of all time and a local lad Sir Tom Finney. Finney is regarded as one of the best of his era and scored 30 international goals in his time. Dubbed the "Preston Plumber" due to Finney actually being a plumber, he remained Preston's most recent full England international until David Nugent who scored on his only international appearance against Andorra. Preston, one of the oldest football clubs used to house the National Football Museum which has recently moved to Manchester.
