Greater Manchester Coverage

Greater Manchester is a landlocked, metropolitan county in the North West. Greater Manchester has an astonishing population of over 2.5 million and comprises of ten metropolitan boroughs, which was formally established on the 1st April 1974 as a result of the Local Government Act 1972, and spans over 490 square miles! Art, tourism, culture and sport provide 16% of employment in Greater Manchester, and that’s not surprising. Culture is a large part of Greater Manchester’s inhabitants’ way of life. Tourist hotspots include “The Urbis” Exhibition Centre in Manchester, and “The Imperial War Museum North” in Trafford Park, mainly known for their architectural design.

Greater Manchester has great transportation links as it lies at the heart of the North West transport network. It has particularly good links with the rest of the UK and worldwide as it is home to Manchester Airport, the fourth busiest airport in the UK. There is also an extensive bus network, provided mainly by First Manchester, and secondly Stagecoach Manchester. A widespread canal network still remains in Greater Manchester to date, back from the Industrial Revolution.
There are some beautiful rivers to visit in Greater Manchester including the main ones, the River Mersey and the River Tame, which run through the boundaries; both then rise in the Pennines. The River Beal, River Douglas and River Irk also run through Greater Manchester, but are considerably smaller.
 
Traditional foods in the Greater Manchester area include Bury Black Pudding, Pea Soup with Bacon Ribs and The Butter Pie. The Butter Pie originates from Wigan, and is known more locally as Friday Pie or Catholic Pie. It is still a favourite today in Greater Manchester.
