Rutland is a landlocked county with rolling terrain and is a rural upland area largely devoted to tillage and pasturage. Rutland also contains a massive artificial reservoir created in the late 1970s which was known as Empingham Reservoir during its construction, until its official opening in 1976. Every Wednesday and Saturday, Oakham opens it markets, allowing items such as fish, fruits, vegetables, cheeses as well as household goods to be bought and sold.
 
Rutland is home to many churches, some of which are currently being restored. Some popular churches around Rutland include St Mary’s, St Joseph’s, St John’s and St Nicholas.
 
In 2007, Rutland became the fourth Fairtrade County and is showing to be one of the least deprived areas in the country.
