Underfloor Heating Solid Floors

There are a number of options for underfloor heating solid floors.  The primary techniques are as follows:-
  • Screed over insulation
  • Insulation under slab
  • Battened Floor
  • Battened floor with aluminium diffuser plates

Screed over insulation

Thickness of installation is typically 100mm insulation plus a further 70mm of screed, total of 170mm above original concrete floor.

A damp proof membrane (DPM) may be required on top of the insulation (below the screed) depending on the requirements of the screeder.

Large thermal mass in the concrete slab will impact heat up time when compared to a 'screed over insulation' installation. However, this can often be the practical choice for retrofit and refurbishment projects when utilising existing insulated floors.

A damp proof membrane (DPM) may be required on top of the insulation (below the screed) depending on the requirements of the screeder.

Battened Floor

Thickness of installation can be as low as 30mm insulation plus a further 20mm of screed plus 18mm flooring grade chipboard, total of 68mm.  Insulation levels in some circumstances can be reduced further giving a minimum thickness of 38mm above the concrete floor. Reduced insulation levels will inevitably lead to greater losses through the floor.

Similar benefits of thickness to a dry screeded battened floor system above. Diffuser plates also offer a quicker and lighter weight solution.  However, should be avoided where possible with heat pumps given the higher flow temperature required.
